Affiliate Program Survey Results, Part II (continued, part 2)
In almost all cases, the
affiliate program products offered were closely related to the actual products or services
the site sold. They used affiliate programs to expand their offerings and to supplement or
enhance their own products.
Significance: If you operate an E-commerce site, but don't sell
products other than your own through affiliate partnerships, you may be missing out on an
additional revenue source. If possible, match affiliate offerings to your products to add
value for your visitors by making it easy to find related products.
Question: How often do you
update your web site with new information or features?
23% Daily (6 site)
31% Several times per week (8 sites)
23% Once per week (6 sites)
19% Once every few weeks (5 sites)
4% Once a month (1 sites)
0% Never (0 sites)
I asked this question to
gauge whether frequently updated sites were having better results with affiliate programs,
since many webmasters are concerned with how much information they should be adding and
how often. For the most part, sites that updated frequently were having better success,
although the results were not as linear as I had expected.
Surprisingly, some of the
sites that labelled themselves as E-commerce sites actually updated their sites the least,
yet were having the most success. For content sites, sites that updated frequently did
perform better however.
Significance: Frequent updates to your site are important for
not only encouraging repeat visits to your site, but also encouraging visitors to explore
affiliate or pay-per-click links. Building a loyal following of visitors can also
sometimes lead to the 'sympathy' purchase or click, where the visitor purposely clicks or
purchases in hopes that it will help the content site grow.
Question: How personal
would you describe your site to your visitors?
35% Very Personal (9
sites)
23% Somewhat Personal (6 sites)
35% Indifferent (9 sites)
8% Impersonal (2 sites)
